Early 1900's Advertising Mug Dr. Pierce Catarrh Cure You may be asking yourself, what the heck is catarrh? Well, back in the 1800’s through early 1900’s, the word referred to any inflammation of the nose, throat, sinuses that caused symptoms like sore throat, severe headache, cold or flu-like symptoms.

And of course, there were many so –called nostrums or medicines offered to cure these medical problems. The Dr. R. V. Pierce listed on the 3 3/4 inch tall mug with a 3 inch diameter, was in fact a real medical doctor from Buffalo, N.Y. The remedy offered to his patients for 50 cents was a formula consisting of salt (over 85%), phenol, camphor, sulfates, and a trace of iron. Mixed with warm water, and then sniffed into the nose, the components of this medicine were supposed to treat what ails you.

Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce died in 1914, and afterwards, his son took over the practice of prescribing medicines for curing catarrh. This scarce mug offers, from Dr. Sage, an actual reward of $500 - a small fortune in those days, to anyone whose illness was not cured by Dr R. V. Pierce’s patent medicine. There have been bottles uncovered with Dr. Pierce’s Catarrh remedy, but we have not seen any other mugs.

1013

2000 Coca-Cola Ceramic Town Square Publix Store in Box This terrific Coca-Cola, town square, Publix Food Store is all decked out for the holidays with its green and red wreaths and bows.

The interior of the 6 1/4 inch by 6 inch store lights up using a candelabra fuse (provided) and plugging the cord into an outlet. By today’s standards, the actual 1930’s Publix Store would be considered very small indeed at 27 feet by 65 feet. But as the signs on this holiday Publix state, Friendly Service and Fresh Produce were important features of doing business, not to mention, having lots of Coca-Cola on hand to please the customers.

This Town Square Publix Store was produced in 2000, was only available through Publix, and is now retired. It is in excellent condition, and comes in the original box.

Coca-Cola 1939 Original Print Ad in Hardwood Frame This vintage hardwood frame measures 8 5/8 inches by 10 5/8 inches and holds an original 6 inch by 8 3/4 inch Coca-Cola print ad, which appeared in National Geographic Magazine. According to the glass covered printed ad, America’s favorite meeting place is the soda fountain, at least by 1939 standards.

What stands out is how formally the young couple is dressed. He’s in a white suite, blue tie and blue handkerchief in his suit pocket, and holding onto his white hat. She’s wearing a fancy dress with jacket and has a straw hat on her head. The bottom right hand side of the ad features the soda jerk; the young man all decked out in his white uniform and soda jerk cap, dispensing Coca-Cola. A sign on the back wall reads, Thirst Stops Here. The last line of the ad tells us that Coca-Cola is the Pause That Refreshes.

All of the printed words on the ad are intact and complete. The picture is in fine condition, with the exception of wear to the soda jerk character.
