1132

Mackinac Michigan Large Handled Tray with Area Scenes Terrific 12 inch by 18 inch dual handled tray features six separate scenes of Mackinac, Michigan. It appears that this vintage tray has a type of fiberboard construction, and is banded with black edging, with over-lapping cream/ivory handles.

Tray features a blue background with bright, multicolor graphics of the Mackinac Bridge, Fort Michilimackinac, The Grand Hotel, The Island Ferry, The Block House, and a surrey/horse and carriage ride.

The front of the tray is in fine vintage condition. The backside of the tray has a few areas of paint chipping off of the black overlay. This does not detract either from the decorative or practical use of this nostalgic tray.

2111

Wooden Fire Sign Memorabilia – Valiant Hose Company The Ever Alert ribbon banner at the top of this terrific old firefighter’s sign really does tell the tale of the vigilant and valiant volunteers who manned the hoses and fought the fires in our country’s early days.

The 23 inch long 9 1/2 inch wide wood sign is based on the old Currier & Ives print, Rushing to the Conflict. The primitive sign with its bright colorful firefighting image, and wire hanger in place on the backside, is sure to please. There is a hairline split in the wood at the top of the sign, but it does not detract from its display worthiness. A paper label carries the name of Pickett’s Post, an antique and collectible shop located in Holmdel, N.J.

11142

NY Daily News Aug ’69 - Astronauts/Tate Murders/Mets Going back in time with the 104 page Final Edition of the Daily News for Thursday, Aug. 14, 1969, serves as a reminder that multiple news stories were in the headlines concurrently. Astro Alley reads the banner on the front page, spotlighting the Astronaut’s ticker tape parade down Broadway after their successful moon landing and return to earth.

Along with the 12 pages of stories and pictures of the lunar astronauts is coverage of the Sharon Tate murders and funeral (before the link to the Manson family was discovered), Ted Kennedy and the days following the Chappaquiddick tragedy, events occurring in India when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister, and in Israel with Golda Meir as Premier.

There are also the sports pages, especially baseball coverage. At this date in August, the Mets were still 9 games behind the league leading Chicago Cubs, and yet to erupt into their big run for the pennant, and their eventual World Series win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Finally, if you like those vintage advertisements, they are plentiful in this Daily News. There are full page department store ads – Macy’s, Sachs, Gimbel’s, Wannamaker’s, Mays, for example. Grocery store ads and companies like Singer sewing machines, Kellogg’s, Firestone, Goodyear and many more. Paper is brown with age wear, and some dog-ears, but over-all in terrific vintage condition.
