1032

1981 Yazzie Pottery Wind Bell Signed by Navajo Artist Wonderful craftsmanship and artistry went into making this 10 1/2 inch long pottery bell by R. Yazzie, of the Navajo Nation.

Narrower at the top, with 5 1/4 inch flaring bottom opening, the wind bell is painted in earth tones such as warm brown, cocoa, ivory and charcoal on a smooth matte background. The design features geometric lines, native symbols, and tepee structures.

Two pottery pieces made of the same composition as the bell are in place. One is a 5 inch long diamond shape, that hangs beneath the bell to catch the wind, while the second one is a 3 inch in diameter circular clapper, inside of the bell, that sounds with a deep, resonant bell tone. These pieces are attached to sturdy, jute rope, through a top opening. The total length of the bell and rope together is 16 inches.

Etched inside the wind bell is the artist’s name, R. Yazzie, a date of May 24, 1981, along with Navajo, Mesa Verde Pottery. We are pleased to be able to offer this superb pottery bell from a renowned Navajo artist at a low purchase price.

1185

Japan Moriage Hand Painted Art Vase-Garden Scene, Birds A marvelous early Moriage, hand painted art vase standing 8 inches tall depicting a striking garden setting with pheasant style birds surrounded by water, more birds, and flowers. The scene appears on two sides of the vase.

This is a distinctive and well-crafted vase that displays fine attention to detail. In between the bird and garden scene is a crest like emblem with flowers and gold trimmed branching. The entire vase surface is decorated in multi colors, has the raised beading or moriage, and the gold enhancements.

We have two identical vases, and this offering is for a single vase. There are marks under the bases, but to date we have not been able to identify them. One has a 21D stamped mark which most likely is a pattern or mold number. There are raised Oriental symbols but both of these are different in appearance, perhaps the name of the person who decorated the vase.

The only note we make is of some minor crazing on the base, surrounding the markings. For certain, this vase is in fine, overall vintage condition and will not disappoint in artistry and design.

1

Lg Antique Yellowware Wash Basin and Pitcher Thompson This is a beauty of a wash bowl/basin pitcher set made with fine detailing and skilled craftsmanship. The large pitcher stands 11 3/4 inches tall and is 8 inches in diameter at its widest part. Embossed flowers, perhaps Morning Glories, vines, scrolls, curlicues, and beading enhance the pitcher along with a painted yellow floral and leaf design at center front. The accompanying wash basin measures 15 1/2 inches in diameter, is ivory in color, and has a scalloped and pleated rim.

Although unmarked, this wonderful set has the same embossed design as others found in antique store pieces carrying the C.C. Thompson Pottery name. A large number of their pre-1900 yellowware was not stamped or marked. This East Liverpool, Ohio company began its operations in 1868 with the production of Rockingham and cream colored Queensware or Yellowware. Warman’s Book of American Porcelain and Pottery describes Thompson’s richly embossed treatments on these pieces which were made through 1888 in greater numbers, and then gradually phased out in favor of semi-porcelain wares.

In over-all very fine condition for its 125+ years. Before running water became the norm, Victorian homes used the wash basin for personal care. Besides looking good, it had to perform and hold up to the harsh lye soap and hard water conditions for many years. There are issues we need to point out to you, and these do show in our pictures as well. The basin has both a small chip and tiny flake to the upper rim as well as chip areas under the base where the basin would have been set down on a table or bench. There are a few scratches at the inside bottom that have picked up discoloration. The pitcher has a chip on the inside near the bottom of the pour spout and some scratches down the inside wall.

There are watermark areas that over years seeped under the glaze in various places on both the pitcher and the bowl. The unglazed yellowware pedestal area on the pitcher shows such discoloration and there is some darkening of the glaze around the yellow flowers.

We don’t want to discredit the merits of this fine looking Victorian age basin and pitcher, only to give you the issues so you can make an informed purchase decision. The antique Thompson wash basin and pitcher displays well, and would add a marvelous accent to any Victorian or Early Americana décor.

1058

Japan Porcelain Lucky Gods Incense Burner & Storage Jar This porcelain covered jar and incense burner are superbly decorated with handpainted Lucky Gods/Gods of Good Fortune. We believe these pieces to have been manufactured pre World War II, perhaps as early as the Taisho Period, during the 1920’s.

The jar is 4 1/2 inches in height to the top of its button finial cover, and measures 3 inches in diameter across. The cover has three fan-shaped panels. There is a single handpainted Lucky God figure and Japanese writing in each, surrounded by cinnabar and gold color band design. The body of the jar has six square panels, each with a God of Good Fortune, as well as additional symbols. The jar sits on a round 1 5/8 inch pedestal base.

Each of the four sides of the incense burner measures 2 1/2 inches and it stand 3 1/4 inches high with four wedge feet under the base. There is a metal insert for the incense burning area. Cinnabar and gold bands surround the Lucky Gods design.

Both pieces are in fine vintage condition without chips, flakes, or loss of vivid color. Each has a magenta, Made in Japan, stamp accompanied by two Japanese symbols, which most likely represent maker’s marks.

1090

1960's Signed Limoges France Arc De Triomphe Plate Commemorating the world’s largest triumphal arch is this superb, artist-signed, Arc De Triomphe plate. Bought on a visit to Paris, France in 1968 by the sole previous owner who had even attached a now browned note of authenticity, to attest to its origins.

The 8 3/8 inch in diameter plate is a marvelous rendering of Napoleon’s victory arch built in the early 1800’s, and much associated with the welcoming entrance into Paris. The artist-signed arch scene is slightly recessed, and the surrounding 1 inch gilt scroll and leaf design appears as bright and elegant as it did forty years ago.

Stamped in green on the backside, Limoges, France, this plate is in very fine vintage condition with the only note we make is of tiny dimpling near the rim of the plate that occurred during the manufacturing process (not perceptible in pictures).

We are also including a black plastic stand to make this beautiful plate display-ready.
