1108

Chulucanas Peru Wall Hanging Clay Jars Scarab Design Noted for its native clays dating back to the Incas, the Chulucanas region of Peru has fostered the growth of native artisans, and has become recognized for the marvelous art pieces created there.

This set of wall hanging water jars, or ollas measure 3 1/4 inches by 4 1/2 inches (the smaller one) and 4 1/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches (the larger one) and complement each other in coloring and design. Both have a reddish brown background with highlighted areas of green, yellow and red. The central design of an incised beetle or scarab is a familiar symbol found on Peruvian pottery.

Each of the jars is signed by the artist under the base, Robert, and the letter M enclosed within the letter C, Chulucanas Peru, 1999 and is in fine, ready to display condition.

1305

Frankoma Pottery #82 Coffee Carafe, Warmer, & 4 Mugs This wonderful Frankoma Pottery coffee set consists of 4 pedestal mugs, one covered carafe, and warmer which functions by placing a votive candle in the recessed area of the warmer stand with the coffee carafe sitting on top.

The bulbous carafe is approximately 7 1/4 inches in height and 7 inches wide across the body including the handle. Matching cups are 4 1/4 inches tall and range in diameter across the tops from 3 inches to 3 1/4 inches. Because the pieces are hand-crafted, each piece is unique and varies slightly in size.

All pieces are done in a mustard yellow color. Mugs are impressed with the Frankoma name and the shape number C13 on the bottom, although on one cup, it is hard to make out the marking. There is also a glaze skip on this cup under the base.

The carafe is stamped on the bottom, with the Frankoma name and the number 82, although difficult to make out. Carafe has a 6-cup capacity.

Warmer stand is 2 3/4 inches tall and is clearly marked Frankoma with no additonal numbers. The underside of the unit displays the unglazed, raw clay finish.

In excellent condition, free of any chips, cracks, flakes or crazing. Pieces look to have been used for display only.

A marvelous example of Frankoma Pottery which is functional, in addition to being an uncommon display piece.

1755

Ceremonial Pottery/Wet Drug Jar–Native American Signed This is a marvelous primitive looking pottery jar, perhaps yellow ware, standing 6 inches tall, 8 inches across from end of pouring spout, and 7 inches from end of handle to back side. The pouring spout, heavy handle and stepped, well-fitted cover lead us to believe that this piece was intended to be used for ceremonial use or as a medicine man’s wet drug jar.

The piece was hand turned on a potter’s wheel, with the handle and spout hand applied separately. The pour spout has been pinched to give a look of hand sewn leather. The fine condition jar is embossed with either the name Kimna or Kivna under the base.

Made In Occupied Japan Mini Toby Jug/Mug Seafarer Although we are uncertain of who is portrayed on this 2 1/2 inch tall Toby mug, we do know that this miniature ceramic piece is sure to please. The bearded fellow has no cracks, chips, or nicks but we do note some age-related darkening of the interior surface.

Stamped underneath the base in black, Made in Occupied Japan, this mini mug would be a nice addition to a vintage display.
