Part of what makes Homer Laughlin such fascinating ceramic history is the fact that they produced marvelous products using more than one hundred different trademarks for themselves and other ceramic makers. During the 1960’s, in addition to their more familiar Laughlin stamps, they decorated blanks for a Scandia by Sheffield line.
This Sheffield line was owned by J and H International Company, and is documented in The American Book of Marks for U.S. Pottery, Porcelain, and Clay. The back stamp on this tray is one shown for Sheffield, USA which is a Homer Laughlin stamp without the Laughlin name.
The handled tray measures 12 1/4 inches in diameter. It has a ribbed ivory colored surface extending from the outer edge inward two inches. The middle area has a smooth surface with a stylized version of the Homer Laughlin fleur-de-lis symbol done in reddish brown on the ivory background. The handled tidbit, appetizer tray is in fine vintage condition. We note that when the handle was secured in place on the backside lug, a short hairline stress mark developed that does not go through to the front side. |
