Impressed Krukmakaren, Ystad (Sweden) under the base, this 4 1/2 inch tall monk-like figure is all about form and simple coloration. In his mouth is a 2 1/2 inch long rolled copper sheeted trumpet or horn. What is he about to announce or proclaim? He makes for a somewhat mysterious, yet intriguing sculpture piece.
Much of Swedish artwork is noted for its simple, understated forms and this is a marvelous example of Krukmakaren statuary. The town of Ystad, Sweden celebrates the cathedral of St a Maria, which dates back to 1267. To this day, the Tower Watchman blows a trumpet to show the citizens of Ystad that they are being cared for and watched over. This petite figurine is a wonderful folk art piece without any cracks, chips, or crazing. |
