King Features Syndicate revived Popeye and his assorted cast of cartoon characters as a new offering on T.V. beginning in 1960 and running more than 200 episodes, ending in 1962. Our vintage numbered colored pencil set was marketed by Hasbro, (Hasenfeld Bros. of Central Falls, Rhode Island) and all this information is printed on the box.
The box is well-worn on the edging and corners, but the colors on the cover are still vibrant and on the inside can be found eleven small colored pencils, all printed with the Sunset Crayon company name, color name, and numbered. We don’t know what size the original 12 pencils were, (missing one). Now, they are in the 3 inch range, secured with a rubber band.
The box cover states that the set comes with a top quality pencil sharpener – that too is gone. We do have 3 smaller size sheets of completed pencil drawings, size 6 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches. In addition, there are 6 larger size finished drawings, measuring 8 x 11 inches. These are an assortment featuring the Sailor Man, Olive Oyl, Brutus ( who was named Bluto in the cartoon features prior to T.V.) and Whimpy. The larger drawings are on heavier stock paper and would be suitable for framing, as well as the illustration on the box cover if desired. |
