This wonderful primitive print depicts a Native American Indian using his reflection at the water’s edge to apply face and body paint for a ceremonial event. The original wood and fabric frame measures 9 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches with the print area alone measuring 8 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. The print, signed by the artist Hellikson under the scene, is done in a primitive minimalist style which emphasizes the warrior’s strength and power. One of a set of six prints purchased at an estate sale, these prints were promotional items sent out by the Forbes Varnish Company, who were innovators of automobile and industrial paints and finishes throughout the 1900's and post war era. Each print originally had a calendar for a particular month of 1948 on the backside. Only a deteriorated October, 1948 calendar survived, but we have made copies of the backing to include with the prints.
There is a logo or trademark of a double M in a circle, along with the letters, ompa which is all that can be seen of the word, company.
Age-related scuffing and wear to the frame and some browning of the print does not detract from a well-crafted and collectable mid century Native American print. |
