Formed from the union of seven separate potteries merging together in 1906, Western Stoneware in Monmouth, Illinois made such items as crocks, jars, and kitchen essentials for more than seventy years.
The casserole or covered dish we offer here most likely dates back to the 1950’s time frame. Measuring 8 1/4 inches in diameter and standing 5 1/2 inches to the top of the knob on the lid, this casserole, with its highly polished chestnut brown glaze, has a ringed/ribbed design over its surface.
The stoneware is in very good vintage condition with some glaze pops and minor areas of missing brown slip color. There are no cracks or chips on this covered bowl which would serve well as a functioning casserole, and definitely is a nice display piece for an Early American kitchen. It is stamped under the base with the Western Stoneware trademark of a W in a Maple Leaf. |
