This unusual pewter plate by Wilton Pewter Company of Mount Joy, P.A., measures 9 inches in diameter and features a crest design in the center. The wording around the crest is in Latin, and we have tried our best to interpret its meaning.
From what we can gather, this would appear to be a commemorative plate made to honor St. Francis de Sales, who was known as the Gentleman Saint, for his persuasive, yet gentle preaching. Born in 1567 in Genoa, Italy, St. Francis had written an Introduction to the Devout Life, and a priestly brotherhood bears his name, the Society of Salesians.
Collegium may refer to the College of Cardinals (the Roman Catholic group of Cardinals appointed by the Pope who as a group have the highest standing in the Church other than the Pope), or another religious body/organization for whom the plate was made.
Plate is in overall very good condition with some wear to the metal, but no dents or dings. The backside has the Wilton name, Mount Joy, PA USA with the RWP within a circle logo and a Handcrafted In The USA sticker attached. |
