This Gilbert Erector Set was manufactured between the years 1939 and 1947. The two projects that can be built with the set are a Walking Beam Engine (made with 7 1/2) and an Airplane Ride, or what was incorrectly termed on the box as a Merry-Go-Round (made with 6 1/2).
This style set with metal blue box began in 1936, with the box color changing to red in 1947. The label with the incorrect Merry-Go-Round terminology began in 1939 and was not modified until 1957. This would put the time frame of manufacture between 1939 and 1947. Box dimensions are 18 inches long by 10 1/4 inches wide and 2 7/8 inches tall.
This set has many parts which we have no way of telling which parts are missing because there is no surviving parts list included. Just by looking at the picture inside of the box, we can tell that there are some missing parts. It would also appear that at least one of the parts, a small cone-shaped object, may have pieces broken off of it.
We have done our best to group similar parts for picture taking and have bagged similar parts after taking pictures for easy perusal. Parts consist of planks, girders, rods, wheels, and smaller hardware such as nuts, bolts, washers, gears and tacks.
There are scratches/dents/rust to the metal box and pieces appropriate for its age. Box does close securely.
Whether you plan on assembling, using for display, or for spare parts, this set is a wonderful piece of early Americana, which speaks in volumes as to the quality of vintage toys. |
