Found in a large box of postcards that were purchased as a lot at an estate sale from a Florida professor who traveled extensively throughout the Orient during the sixties time frame. This card is in fine vintage condition with only some age related browning.

18642

University of North Carolina Vtg Ceramic/Wood Look Mug A terrific oldie, but goodie probably from the 1950’s or earlier is this commemorative UNC mug/stein that stands 5 1/4 inches tall, measures 3 inches across the top, and has a 4 inch wide base. Ceramic with a wood look appearance, it was constructed so that the thick roping is inset into the mug, not just resting on the top surface. The sturdy rope handle has three copper bands in place.

The gold university crest/shield on the front of the mug has UNC Lux and Libertas printed on the design. There are two blue colored stains on the interior bottom under the glaze, occurring during manufacture and a small brown streak which probably happened over time from crazing. Very faint impression under the base appears to read, Made in USA but no manufacturer name.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 18637: Vintage Curly Koa Wood Bowls Kanes of Hawaii
Click for more detail...
18637

Vintage Curly Koa Wood Bowls Kanes of Hawaii Because Koa wood is indigenous only to the Hawaiian Islands, there is not an abundance of items constructed with Koa. The wood graining, curliness of the wood, with its multi-tones and durability, has long been favored by Hawaiian artisans for decorative and utilitarian items like bowls.

These three vintage bowls measure 7 inches across the top and stand 2 inches tall. We do make note of some areas of discoloring to the bowls. We are not sure if this is from the Koa wood, or possibly from use with acidic type food. One of them has a tight hairline crack which does not show in our pictures, and does not detract from its appearance or usage. Each bowl has incised under the base, Kane’s of Hawaii, Koa Wood.

18633

Richardson Rome Vintage Framed Morning Ducks Etching Known for his Rocky Mountain landscapes, and his natural wildlife etchings, Richardson Rome’s work can be found hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Brooklyn Museum as well as in art galleries across the U.S.A.

Born in Minnesota in 1902, the artist followed varied career paths before opening his own studio in Estes Park, Colorado in the early thirties. Time spent as a wrangler in his early years inspired much of his art work, making him a keen observer of nature and landscapes.

This thirties/forties etching measures 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches in total framed size, with the matted etching being 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches. Simply titled, Morning, it depicts several mallard ducks taking flight from their marsh sanctuary to search for the day’s food. Richardson Rome’s pencil signature is on the bottom right hand side of the etching. We do note slight age fading or burn to the surrounding mat area, and this can be seen in our pictures.

About the artist information can be found on the backside, along with a leather loop hanger, making this nature enthusiast’s etching ready for display.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 18632: 4 VTG Japan Aizu LacquerWare Bowls Deep Red and Makie
Click for more detail...
18632

4 VTG Japan Aizu LacquerWare Bowls Deep Red and Makie This four piece set of beautiful fifties/sixties Japanese lacquerware was created by several artisans, all skilled in a particular aspect of design. The Aizu manufactory has long been recognized as one of the highest quality makers of lacquerware.

The large server bowl measures 10 1/2 inches in diameter and stands 4 1/4 inches tall. The three smaller sized bowls are 5 1/4 inches in diameter and are 1 3/4 inches high. Carved from natural wood, perhaps jujube, all of the pieces were lacquered in a 3-step process. A marvelous scene of pagoda, trees and birds, along with a stone treatment with tiny pieces of mother-of-pearl and mica were added to the design. A gold dusting process called makie is used by an artist specially trained in that technique.

The colors on this set are visually stunning as well. A deep burgundy red, combined with the gold dust treatment are used for the scenes which encircle the outside of the large server bowl, and are on the interior bottom of the 3 small bowls.

We do note that the bowls were used as a functioning set on special occasions by its one previous owner, and have light utensil marks on the interior bottom of the bowls. One of the small bowls has a tiny chip in the lacquerware finish. This does show in our pictures. The larger bowl has a few flakes of missing lacquer on the top rim, but this does not detract from the set’s over-all fine vintage condition.
